Tile installation in Charlotte
Tile installation covers preparing the substrate, setting the layout, cutting and bonding tile, then grouting and sealing it. MDO Contracting installs floor, wall, shower and backsplash tile throughout Charlotte, NC, in porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and large format.
Tile is layout before it is anything else. Where the first line lands decides whether a room looks built or merely tiled, and no amount of good setting fixes a bad starting point.
What the job involves
- Floors, walls, showers, backsplashes and fireplace surrounds
- Substrate prep, flattening and waterproofing so the work outlives the warranty
- Pattern layouts including herringbone, chevron, stack bond and running bond
- Large format tile and the extra flatness prep it demands
- Natural stone, including the sealing it needs and the handling it does not forgive
- Grout colour chosen deliberately, then sealed

How the work runs
- 01
Check the substrate
Flatness, movement and moisture get checked first. Tile telegraphs whatever is under it.
- 02
Set the layout
Centre lines get snapped and the cuts get planned to land where you are least likely to look.
- 03
Set the tile
Full coverage under every piece, lippage controlled as the work goes, not corrected after.
- 04
Grout and seal
Grout goes in, joints get cleaned, and stone or grout gets sealed where the material needs it.
Tile installation questions
- Can you tile over my existing floor?
- Sometimes, and it depends entirely on what is under there and how flat it is. Tiling over a floor that moves is how you get cracked grout within a year, so the substrate gets checked before anyone commits.
- What is lippage?
- Lippage is when the edge of one tile sits higher than its neighbour. It is most visible in raking light and on large format tile, and it is controlled by flattening the substrate and setting carefully, not by grout.
- Do you do herringbone and other patterns?
- Yes. Patterns need more layout time and produce more cuts and more waste, so plan the material order around that.
- Does natural stone need sealing?
- Most does, and some needs resealing periodically. Porcelain generally does not, though the grout still might.
- How long before I can walk on it?
- It varies by setting material and conditions. You get a specific answer for your job before the crew leaves.
