Flooring installation in Charlotte

Flooring installation covers subfloor preparation, moisture and levelling checks, laying the floor, and finishing the edges with transitions and trim. MDO Contracting installs hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank and tile flooring across Charlotte, NC.

Floor runs through the whole house, so it is the one finish that has to get along with every room it touches, every doorway it passes and every threshold it dies into.

What the job involves

  • Solid hardwood, engineered wood and luxury vinyl plank
  • Tile flooring, including large format
  • Subfloor prep, levelling and moisture checks before anything is laid
  • Transitions, thresholds and stair treatment
  • Trim and shoe moulding to close the job out

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Acclimate and check

Wood sits in the house before it goes down, and the subfloor gets checked for flat and for moisture.

  2. 02

    Prep the subfloor

Levelling, patching and fastening happen here. This is the step that decides whether the floor squeaks in two years.

  3. 03

    Lay the floor

Direction and starting line get set against the longest sightline in the house, not against whichever wall is closest.

  4. 04

    Trim it out

Transitions, thresholds and shoe moulding, so the floor ends deliberately rather than just stopping.

Flooring questions

Hardwood, engineered or LVP?
Solid hardwood can be refinished many times and suits above-grade rooms. Engineered handles humidity swings better. LVP is waterproof and the most forgiving with kids and dogs. The right answer depends on the room and how the house is used.
Do I have to move out?
Usually not. Flooring is normally phased room by room so a family can stay in the house. Say up front which rooms you cannot lose at once.
Does my subfloor need levelling?
Most older Charlotte houses need some. Large format tile and long plank runs are the least forgiving of a subfloor that is out.
Which direction should the boards run?
Usually along the longest sightline, or perpendicular to the floor joists when structure decides it. It gets set on site, not assumed.
