How a coffered ceiling goes in
- Layout
The grid is set off the room, not off a drawing.
Rooms are rarely square. Every wall gets measured and the beam lines get snapped so the grid reads parallel to the eye, whether or not the walls agree.
- Beams
Beams built in place, sized to the ceiling height.
Depth and spacing are chosen against the actual height so the room gains detail without losing headroom. Fixtures land in panels, never in a beam.
- Moulding
Panel moulding, and the reveal where beam meets panel.
A hairline of shadow along every beam is what makes the ceiling read as built rather than applied. It is the smallest detail on the job and the one you see from the doorway.
- Finish
Filled, caulked, primed and painted to a finish grade.
The last day is fill, sand, caulk and two coats, so the ceiling reads as part of the house. Then a walkthrough where you list anything that is not right.
Built so you do not have to think about it again.
